Terrorism: the dearth of purpose

So, what is it? Something which is synonymous with life, something which breathes in our consciousness incessantly or something which blurred our identity with unspoken fear, plethora of insecurities.

Keeping my subjectivity regarding terrorism aside, let’s get into the very essence of the word called ‘terror’. It comes from the Latin word, ‘terrere’ meaning ‘to frighten’. To elaborate it further, it is an act of unleashing violence on non-combatants backed by an ideological goal.

The question is – who are these terrorists? Does it include the so-called traditional blasters or can the definition be broadened further?

J&K insurgency, red corridor naxalism, tussle between seven sisters & the govt. are traditional examples of terrorism. But the new face of terrorism is donned by Shiv-Sena, the intolerant elements leading to exclusion of M.F. Hussain and Taslima Nasreen, the SPOs, Salwa Judum and the greyhounds. So basically, the hat of terrorism is shared by all of us- the government, the separatist elements and the civilians.

So, what is this fight all about? Why are we trapped in this cul-de-sac of continued blood game?

The fight is not of ideology but of lack of purpose. Let me strike an analogy. A family sticks together, eat together, laugh together. Yes, the complaints, fears, insecurities exist but all the ‘i’s’ are ultimately converged into ‘we the family’.

So, the smaller purposes are submerged into bigger purpose. Let’s find a higher purpose.

The solution cannot be crutched upon any single machinery – be it the government, civilians or separatist elements. The need of the hour is to get rid of narrow ideologies and work towards a bigger purpose – INDIA.

Few days ago, a landmark judgment was pronounced – “KASAB IS GUILTY”. Can you sense the smell of hope? Yes I can!!!!! But the ugly head of terrorism is once again seen in the form of blasts at Times Square, USA. Another check on our resilience?
